Currently revising Chapter 3, a good thing Professor Shepherd nudged me to slow down and 'do' the Anglo-American early-to-late modern build-up of narratives which supported hyper-sovereignty, i.e. the power to kill without end. Currently reviewing Mbembe's work which will support my thesis (forthcoming in my dissertation!, sorry, can't share yet, though after May will link the diss here, so thanks and be patient!) Frustrated with how dependent the Sharepoint model is upon one person's ideations, skills, knowledge and energy, and thinking about future projects as I move into the Job Market in search of a new home, I got to browsing digital journals this morning. I found good news and am feeling hopeful that my move forward toward new communities will be empowered through critical dialogues and collaborations with engaged civic minded actors. Lately, I contemplate the 'status' of Nde' women in El Calaboz Rancheria, at the U.S.-Mexico International Boundary, and struggle with our positionality in relation to the histories of empires, states and nation-states which illegitimately 'settled' our traditional lands. Lately, the term 'stateless' emerged in an article by historian Brian DeLay which struck a chord, though I think DeLay and I use the concept in divergent ways. Stateless, dispossessed, peasants, nomadic-- these are all terms which the state and western legal thought has utilized/and utilizes as surgical tools to disrupt and alienate/make foreign aboriginal peoples' undeniable inherent relationship with and to our own lands legally, culturally, ideologically and psychologically.
